Craftsman Pro 25The good and bad of the Craftsman Professional 25 Gallon Air Compressor

When searching for a new compressor, noise reduction is probably near the top of the list, in terms of features looking for. There are so many brands that say they are ‘quite’, but the reality is most are not. Most, you cannot stand to be in the same room with it, let alone work in proximity to it.

My initial search criteria included acceptable air pressure and very low noise. The Craftsman Professional 25 Gallon Air Compressor, with a tank pressure of 150 psi and more than six CFM with average work load, there will be plenty of pressure to go around.

Granted, many more models will have a much greater psi output, but this review is based on the need for a QUIET compressor. Though it is a piece of machinery and will invariably have noise, it is remarkably light on the ears. It is far quieter than many other models in the QUIET class, such as Dewalt’s nailer compressors, a quieter than the Ingersoll Rand comparable model. I think the noise reduction, among over constructed means, is from keeping the speed on low.

Just as with any Craftsman wrench or power tool, you can come to expect quality from their line of compressors. Beyond the mechanism, they spent time in providing a good, high-quality finish and a nicely laid-out control panel. A few very good options/accessories include a quick-connect, which always comes in handy, and a much better option than the traditional compressors. The tires are even the inflatable-style…makes it much easier to haul around. To occasionally drain the unit, the tank is equipped with a perfectly-positioned drain value. The motor is an American-made model from GE. The manual is easy to read. Make sure to purchase a bottle of SAE 20 oil, as none come included at purchase, and also have a ‘nipple’ as the fill hole is very small.

Checking the oil level is not difficult, you simply drain the tank pressure and using a wrench, loosen and remove the fill plug to check the the level. It would be nice though, if there was a site-glass like you will find with more expensive models, but not a huge disappointment.

Runs off of a 15 AMP circuit, relatively portable and easy to operate, all at a fair price, which is not much more than a typical oil-free model. Although you can find oil-free models for less, you will pay more in the long run, especially if you think the oil-free claim of ‘maintenance-free’ is true…it is not, and you will find yourself fixing or replacing that compressor much sooner.
